Described by Jazz Times as "perhaps the most innovative straight ahead jazz guitarist to emerge in years," Rory Stuart brings rhythmic surprise and original music to this Jazz Presents. The concert will feature challenging music, some of it never before publicly performed, by Rory's new trio with mrudangam performer Rajna Swaminathan and tenor saxophonist (and alumnus) Francesco Geminiani; and by a larger ensemble, featuring alumni, current students, and other amazing musicians.
Rory's new trio is unusual in its instrumentation and in how it draws from South Indian (Carnatic) and modern jazz traditions, using both compositional and improvisational concepts from these and other sources, and combining them in a distinctive way. The trio's mrudangam player, Rajna Swaminathan, a disciple and protege of mrdudangam master Umayalpuram K. Sivaraman is one of only a handful of female mrudangam players in the world, and had performed with both renowned classical musicians and dancers, and distinguished jazz musicians such as Vijay Iyer and Steve Coleman. New School graduate and rising young star Francesco Geminiani hails from Verona Italy, and was a student of Robert Bonisolo before coming to the New School in 2012.
A Fulbright Scholar, and recipient of grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and Meet the Composer, Rory has led critically acclaimed groups for many years, performed and taught around the world (from Chile to Korea, Sweden to Kazakhstan to Columbia, Israel to India) as well as performing as a sideman with many jazz legends and luminaries (see www.rorystuart.com). He has also designed and taught the rhythm curriculum at NSJCM for many years, and received the “Teaching Excellence” award, as well as directing and teaching workshops and clinics around the world.
