Student engagement is at the forefront. Choice is a motivator. Research, critical thinking and creativity join forces. Collaboration and community are essential. These are the fundamental elements of Project-Based Learning (PBL). This video, “Crossroads and Crosswords,” captures the spirited language learning as a result of PBL in a Listening-Speaking class in the Intensive English Studies program at The New School ( http://www.newschool.edu). The “Crossroads and Crosswords” project was predicated on values which mirror the visions of The New School: project-based learning, conceptual development and critical thinking; creativity and innovation; community engagement, and collaboration across disciplines. Additionally, language, art and music were integral components of the project. For the culminating event, sixty faculty, students, and friends of the New School learning community came together to hear about the students’ food trucks and solve the students’ crossword puzzles.

Tamara Kirson has been incorporating PBL in her language classrooms for the past seventeen years, first at CUNY and for the past seven years at The New School. She is also Project Development Advisor for the Intensive English Program at The New School, a role in which she mentors other educators in this teaching methodology. Additionally, she facilitates professional development workshops on PBL.
